VPXD must be stopped to perform this operation : VMware vcentre server appliance error

I got this strange error message when I was configuring the VMware vCentre server appliance in my ESXi server test lab. The message read

“VPXD must be stopped to perform this operation”

VPXD must be stopped to perform this operation VMware vcentre server appliance error

On digging out I found this is the Virtual Centre Sever service. In order to change the database or the account settings the vcenter service should not be running. We can disable it from the following page on the webconsole of the VMware vcentre server appliance .

vCenter Server-> Status -> then click on stop vcenter.

VPXD must be stopped to perform this operation VMware vcentre server appliance error

In my case it was not working so I had to login to the console of the VMware vcentre server appliance using ssh. The login credentials are the same as root/vmware.
Type the command

chkconfig

and it will display all the services with their status. You can verify in the next screenshot that VPXD i.e vmware-vxpd is on.

We can disable the VPXD service using the following command.

chkconfig vmware-vpxd off

Now hope the error is resolved and you will not get error “VPXD must be stopped to perform this operation”

Yeah, “service vmware-vpxd stop” is working in vSphere 5.5. Thank you.

Using ‘chkconfig vmware-vpxd off’ will prevent that service from starting on boot. If you just want to stop the service, use ‘service vmware-vpxd stop’
